Building History
Before the corner of Park and 38th was designated 67 Park Avenue, it was 101 E 38th Street, the location of a gracious mansion. It was home to the socially prominent financier Ashbel Barney and later to his son Charles T. Barney. Constructed on the same site in 1922, the 67 Park apartment building was designed by Schwartz & Gross, one of the best and most prolific architectural firms of the prewar period. The then-rental apartments were advertised as having a “dignified atmosphere” and fulfilling “the requirements of a charming, attractive private house”--which is still true for the present-day 67 Park Avenue cooperative.
